The Simi Valley Police Department shared video from the encounter on its Facebook page, saying that they were called to chase the bear away after it broke into a home. Police said the homeowners were locked in an upstairs bedroom and called 911 after the bear came in through a kitchen door.

The video shows the officers opening the front door of the home, using a key the homeowner dropped down from an upstairs window, and shouting for the bear to leave. The weapon seen in the video is a non-lethal launcher designed to fire a rubber projectile and scare the bear if necessary, police said in the Facebook post.

“As the officers entered the residence, they observed the bear in the kitchen. It appeared the bear ate a freshly baked cake and rummaged through the refrigerator,” police said in the Facebook post. The video shows the bear running out of the home and jumping over a fence after it sees officers in the house.

Others in Simi Valley reported seeing bears as well, though it’s unclear whether it was the same bear. A resident called police on Saturday evening to report a bear swimming in their pool and going through their trash cans, the Simi Valley Police Department said in an alert to residents.

“I just happened to look over the window and thought it was a person swimming in the pool,” Homeowner Mike Emanuel told KTTV. “I was like, ‘Who the hell was in the swimming pool?’”

Emanuel told the station that when he first called police, they didn’t believe him.

“I said, ‘Hey, there’s a bear in my backyard.’ And they asked me if I’d been drinking,” Emanuel told KTTV.

In its alert, officers warned people to stay away from bears saying, “Although cute, they are still wild animals.”
