WATERLOO — The Seneca County House of Concern now serves about 400 families a month, an increase of about 50 since January.
Due to the pandemic, more people find themselves in need of assistance from food pantries, putting pressure on pantries such as the House of Concern to find new ways to store more fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products — and an important option in storing food is a refrigerator.
It was determined that the House of Concern at 22 Locust St. needed a reliable, two-door commercial refrigerator to be able to accept more donations of fresh fruits, vegetables and low-fat milk products. That need has been met, thanks to a grant from the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program of the Seneca County Health Department.
The county Health Department worked with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County to identify the House of Concern’s need. Grant money was used to purchase a commercial refrigerator that was delivered to the House of Concern in May.
“We were fortunate to have CHSC funds available to solve this problem so that families can have access to healthy food options,” CCE rep Maureen Tidball said.
Tidball said she worked with Delores Morgan and Angel Landis of the House of Concern to identify the need and solution.
“Without this appropriate storage space, donations of fresh produce sometimes have to be turned away or run the risk of spoiling before families can use it,” health department rep Sara Flack said.
After conducting a food service guideline assessment with House of Concern staff, it was determined they could offer more to clients if they had more refrigerator space, noting that some of their existing units were old and costly to repair.
The House of Concern is the largest food pantry in the county and has been serving people for more than 51 years.
