The long-awaited Delhi meat market Off the Hoof held its grand opening Feb. 26. The market specializes in providing fresh beef and other meats to the surrounding areas. As a unique service, it was created with the twin goals of providing resources to Delhi and making the town a destination for visitors. In addition to fresh meat, Off the Hoof will also act as a general grocery store for Delhi according to the store’s meat manager, Matt Schuster.

“The best thing is that Delhi is going to have fresh meat cut to order,” said Schuster. “The meat is going to be fresh every day and we’re going to have chicken, pork, beef, plus anything else you need like milk and bananas. With Lent coming up we’re going to have shrimp and a few sections of fish like salmon, cod, crab and lobster tails. It’s going to be a one-stop-shop.”

Schuster said all the meat is sourced locally from Iowa farmers and vendors to support local businesses and ensure high-quality products sold at competitive prices. As a 38-year veteran in the meat business, he believes the store has a bright future ahead with several orders already placed from the surrounding areas.

“I already have one order for 1,500 burgers and another for 500. We have orders for 300 steaks for various restaurants in Dubuque and Maquoketa, so we’re going to service a lot of those. We’re going to vacuum pack the steaks, which a lot of shops won’t do, so they can take them out one or two at a time for less waste and longer freshness.”

The opening of Off the Hoof marks the first step in the franchising of the Kentucky-based business. Originally founded in 2012 by Nick Smith in Mayfield, Ken., this family business soon expanded to three locations in the state and came to Iowa through a business relationship with Delhi.

Jeff Riley, Smith’s uncle and co-owner of Off the Hoof, said his family had always been in the cattle business and Smith envisioned creating a meat store from the ground up with the idea of selling their product. It was also Smith’s idea to franchise to Iowa thanks to the family’s friendship with Delhi residents Greg and Nancy Preussner.

“They’ve been business associates and friends of ours for 30 years,” said Riley. “We have three locations in Kentucky and Greg came down a couple of times. I’d visited Delhi and asked if he’d ever be interested in putting a store there. It just grew from there.”

Riley said Delhi’s community and busy summer season made it a perfect place to invest in a new store.

“For one of these stores to be successful takes a lot of foot traffic. I was a little apprehensive going into it with the size of Delhi, but they have a lot of traffic in the summer and the whole sense of community and the way the people are behind the community here was what attracted us.”

“Delhi was our prime location to start a franchise. Expanding to other Iowa locations is on the table. Greg and Nancy have been reaching out and talking about different communities and several were interested.”

Riley said he’s very happy with how the Delhi Off the Hoof location has turned out and has a lot of faith in the team running it.

“I am totally impressed with the facility. I think they went above and beyond, taking the concept of the original store and put a little Iowa twist to it.”
