A two-alarm fire broke out in a La Mesa grocery store early Monday, causing $100,000 in damage before firefighters were able to put it out, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the Vine Ripe Market on Fletcher Parkway near Jackson Drive around 5:15 a.m. and found a lot of smoke inside the building, said Andy McKellar, a spokesperson for Heartland Fire & Rescue Department. La Mesa firefighters were assisted by personnel from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
“There was a lot of smoke so there’s probably considerable damage to the stock inside the market,” he said in a statement.
Investigators determined the fire likely started inside a refrigerated display case.
The fire alarm and sprinkler system inside the market worked well, which helped to keep the fire damage to a minimum, he said.
No injuries were reported. The store was closed at the time of the fire.
