3 adults, 2 kids hurt after vehicle drives through Newton flea market

NEWTON, N.C. — Three adults and two children were hurt Thursday after a driver lost control of a pickup truck and plowed into a display of appliances, sending the appliances into a crowd at an open-air flea market in Newton.

The crash happened at about 11:19 a.m. at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Newton, according to a release from the Newton Police Department. Officers found that a Ford Sport Trac drove into an “appliance display” including refrigerators and ovens, and that some of the appliances hit the victims as they were walking nearby. Police didn’t say if anyone was hit directly by the Sport Trac.

According to investigators, 83-year-old Gerald S. Flowers of Conover was driving the pickup truck as it hit the appliances. He was charged with careless and reckless driving, and damage to property, according to Newton PD.

Police say the three adults and a child were taken to area hospitals, while another child was treated at the scene. Newton PD told Channel 9 all of the injuries “appear to be non-life threatening.”
